Amigurumi Star - Free Crochet Pattern
This little star ornament was one of the first patterns I published on my old blog, all the way back in 2013. Here's an updated version of the pattern, with new photos and some more instructions about how to sew them together! You can also get an inexpensive downloadable PDF version in my store.

This amigurumi star is made by crocheting two flat star shapes and sewing them together back to back, with a bit of stuffing inside. They look cute with or without a face, and can be used for a variety of things. You could make them in different sizes, sew a hanging loop or keyring on top, string them together to make a garland, or use them as stocking stuffers or holiday decorations.
Difficulty: Easy.
The pattern uses mostly single crochet stitches. Just be sure to count carefully so that your increases and decreases end up in the right place.
Size:
Using worsted weight yarn and a 3.5 mm (E) crochet hook, your star will be about 5 cm (2 in) wide. However, exact gauge isn't important, and you can easily adjust the size by using thicker or thinner yarn.
You will need:
• Medium (worsted) weight yarn in any colour - about 20 m (22 yds)
• 3.5 mm (E) crochet hook
• Toy stuffing
• Yarn needle
• 6 mm round black beads for eyes
• Black sewing thread
• Sewing needle
Abbreviations (US crochet terms):
R - round(s)
st(s) - stitch(es)
ss - slip stitch
sc - single crochet
Special stitches:
ss2tog (slip stitch 2 together):
Insert your hook through the FRONT LOOPS of the next 2 stitches, from bottom to top. Yarn over and pull through ALL the loops on your hook.
ss3tog (slip stitch 3 together):
Insert your hook through the FRONT LOOPS of the next 3 stitches, from bottom to top. Yarn over and pull through ALL the loops on your hook.
Pattern:
Work in the round, without joining rounds. Start with a magic ring.
R1: 5 sc in a ring.
R2: 2 sc in each st around. [10 sc]
R3: (Ss in next st, 3 sc in next st) 5 times. [20 sts]
R4: (Ss in next st, sc in next st, 3 sc in next st, sc in next st) 5 times. [30 sts]
R5: Ss2tog, sc in next st, 5 sc in next st, sc in next st. (Ss3tog, sc in next st, 5 sc in next st, sc in next st) 4 times. Ss2tog. [40 sts]
Cut yarn, leaving about 80 cm (32 inches) for sewing, and finish off. Join round with an invisible join.
Make a second star, but you’ll only need a short yarn tail of about 15 cm (6 in) for this one. Weave in the short yarn end after joining the round with an invisible join.

Sew the pieces together
If you want to use safety eyes instead of beads for the eyes, attach them now before sewing the pieces together.
Hold your two star shapes together, back to back. Use the long yarn tail to sew along the edges, joining the stars together. I like to use a running stitch, working through both loops of the edge stitches.

When there is still a small gap left, add some stuffing. You can use the back of your crochet hook to push the stuffing into the points of the star.
Once you’ve sewn all the way around the star, you might notice the edges look a bit wavy, and there are gaps between the stitches. To fix this, sew around the edge again in the opposite direction, filling in the gaps.
After the edges are sewn up, hide the yarn tail inside the amigurumi.

Adding a face
Use black thread to sew on the black beads for eyes. I like to position them near the bottom of the star, between rounds 4 and 5 of the body.
Use black thread to sew a small mouth between the eyes.

Optional extras
If you want to, you can sew a keychain on top of your star, add a hanging loop to turn it into a decorative ornament, or string a few together to make a cute garland.
Your little amigurumi star is now complete!
