Do you love Studio Ghibli movies as much as I do? These cute amigurumi Soot Sprites (also called Susuwatari) are perfect for Ghibli fans, and are so quick and easy to make!
Difficulty: Easy
Size:
Using fingering weight yarn and a 2 mm crochet hook, your Soot Sprite will be about 3 cm (1.2 in) wide. However, exact gauge isn't important, and you can easily adjust the size by using thicker or thinner yarn.
You will need:
• Fingering weight yarn in black, white, and an accent colour
• 4 mm round black beads for eyes
• Black sewing thread
• Toy stuffing
• Craft glue
• 2 mm crochet hook
• Sewing needle
• Yarn needle
Abbreviations (US crochet terms):
R - round(s)
ch - chain
st(s) - stitch(es)
ss - slip stitch
sc - single crochet
dec - decrease (single crochet 2 together)
Soot Sprite Amigurumi Pattern
Body
Work in the round, without joining rounds. Using black yarn, start with a magic ring
R1: 6 sc in a ring. [6 sts]
R2: 2 sc in each st around. [12 sts]
R3: (2 sc in next st, sc in next st) 6 times. [18 sts]
R4: (2 sc in next st, sc in next 2 sts) 6 times. [24 sts]
R5-9: Sc in each st around, for 5 rounds. [24 sts per round]
R10: (Dec, sc in next 2 sts) 6 times. [18 sts]
R11: (Dec, sc in next st) 6 times. [12 sts]
Stuff the amigurumi until it's nice and puffy.
R12: Dec 6 times. [6 sts]
Cut yarn, leaving about 30 cm for sewing, and finish off.
Eyes (Make 2)
Using white yarn, start with a magic ring.
R1: 8 sc in the ring. [8 sc]
Cut yarn, leaving a tail for sewing, and finish off. Join round with an invisible join.
Star candy
Using accent colour, start with a magic ring.
R1: (Ch 3, ss in the ring) 5 times.
Cut yarn, leaving a tail for sewing, and finish off.
Finishing
Sew the white eyes onto the black body, roughly in line with rounds 5 to 8 of the body.
Use black thread to sew the eye beads in the middle of the white eyes.
Sew the candy onto the body, in any position you like.
Use the black yarn tail to sew the body's hole closed. Then use the tail to form the your Soot Sprite's arms and legs. Use a small blob of glue to secure the limbs in place.
Your little Soot Sprite is complete!
